All weekend there had been talk of World Cup rivalries between Germany and the UK, but this time it wasn’t penalties which decided the outcome. Outplayed over the course of five rounds of playoffs, Team UK could only summon up one win; Oliver Price winning his table in Round 3. It was a case of what might have been as the Team USA narrowly beat Team Germany to advance straight through to the semi-final stages. The other teams head into the quarter-finals where they must face another nation in a heads-up format.
It was a tall order for Team UK going into the final round. The team were 13000 points behind, and new that they needed at least two top 2 finishes to stand any chance of ensuring their survival into day 2. They started poorly, with Sam Trickett busting AT v JJ.
Shortly afterwards, Oliver Price and Simon Deadman busted in quick succession leaving the hopes of Team UK resting on the shoulders of the Salter brothers, Jack and Louis. Louis survived one all-in K9 vs 77 against Bendenelli, and rivered a flush to ensure the vital double up but it wasn’t enough. First Louis and then Jack busted to mean Team UK finished last of the eight teams, and was eliminated at the playoff stage.
